Horses of each breed are put together in different ways with different body types to accomplish different purposes. But all horses bodies should be put together in a way that contributes to them being sound. Being sound means the horse does not limp or travel unnaturally because of pain or discomfort.
In this lesson, you will learn what makes an overall balanced horse with good conformation.
Just because a horse looks "pretty", doesn't mean his body is put together in a way that keeps him healthy or sound.
A horses skeleton is the frame of his body. You will learn how the bones and limbs should line up in order to keep the horse sound.
Watch these ponies trot from different angles. You can see that they each move differently. Horses with straighter legs and hooves will move straighter and more free than horses with crooked legs and hooves.
Watch this video to learn how conformation can affect the horses way of going, ability to trot and canter, how well or if they can jump, or if they perhaps will go lame.
